Budapest is divided by the Danube into Buda and Pest.

Buda is hillier, quieter and home to the Castle District. Pest is flatter and contains many of the city’s restaurants, nightlife areas, shopping streets and major central attractions.

For most first-time visitors, staying on the Pest side or close to the Danube makes sightseeing particularly convenient.

How Many Days Do You Need in Budapest?

2 Days — Quick Budapest Break

Two days is enough for the major highlights:

  • Parliament
  • Buda Castle
  • Fisherman’s Bastion
  • Central Pest
  • A thermal bath
  • A Danube cruise

It will be busy, but you’ll see the essentials.

3 Days — Recommended

Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit.

You’ll have enough time for the major sights, a thermal bath, Hungarian food, nightlife and a Danube cruise without rushing constantly.

4–5 Days — Slow Down & Explore

Four or five days gives you time for:

  • Hidden gems
  • Museums
  • More neighborhoods
  • Shopping
  • Longer thermal-bath visits
  • Day trips outside Budapest

Our recommendation: If this is your first Budapest trip, aim for 3 days if possible.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Budapest?

There isn’t one perfect season — it depends on what you want.

🌸 Spring: Great for sightseeing and walking.

☀️ Summer: Long days, outdoor activities, nightlife and Danube cruises. It can get hot.

🍂 Autumn: Comfortable sightseeing weather and fewer summer crowds.

❄️ Winter: Thermal baths, museums, cozy cafés and Christmas atmosphere.

🎄 December: Best if Christmas markets and festive Budapest are a priority.

For a detailed month-by-month breakdown, see our Best Time to Visit Budapest guide.

How to Get From Budapest Airport to the City

Budapest Airport is around 16 km from the city center.

For most visitors, there are three main options.

OptionCurrent price / infoBest for
100E Airport Express2,500 HUFMost first-time visitors
200E + MetroRegular BKK ticket/passBudget travelers
Taxi / Private TransferVariesLuggage, families & convenience

🚌 100E Airport Express

The 100E Airport Express runs between Budapest Airport and central Budapest, including Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér.

It operates 24/7.

The current airport shuttle ticket is 2,500 HUF. A special 1,000 HUF add-on ticket is available for holders of eligible Budapest, Pest County or Hungary passes.

Important: Normal BKK tickets and travelcards are not valid by themselves on the 100E.

BudapestRiver Pick:100E for most first-time visitors.

🚌 200E + Metro

The 200E connects the airport with the city’s public transport network, where you can continue by metro.

It uses regular BKK tickets and passes and operates around the clock.

It’s cheaper than the 100E but requires a transfer, so the 100E is usually more convenient with luggage.

🚕 Taxi or Private Transfer

For a door-to-door journey, use an official taxi or pre-booked private transfer.

Avoid accepting rides from random people approaching you inside the airport.

Public Transport, BudapestGO , Taxis

📱 BudapestGO

You do not need a rental car for a normal Budapest trip. The city’s metro, trams and buses make getting around relatively easy.

BudapestGO Application: It is the easiest way for most tourists to navigate Budapest’s public transport system.

Current BKK prices include:

  • Single ticket: 500 HUF
  • 24-hour travelcard: 2,750 HUF
  • 72-hour travelcard: 5,750 HUF
  • 100E Airport Express: 2,500 HUF

Prices can change, so always check the official BKK website before your trip. (Last updated: 2026. Aug)

⚠️ Validate your ticket -If you’re using a paper single ticket, make sure you validate it correctly before travelling. Digital tickets and travelcards also have specific activation/boarding rules.

🚋 Metro, Trams & Walking

Budapest’s central areas are very walkable.

Use public transport when distances become longer, especially between Buda and Pest.

Trams are particularly useful for sightseeing along the Danube.

🚲 Bikes & E-Scooters & Taxis

MOL Bubi and shared e-scooters can be useful for shorter trips:  Check the current app and pricing before using them, as services and conditions can change.

Taxis: Use reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps rather than accepting random street offers.

What to Eat & Drink in Budapest

Hungarian food is much more than goulash.

🇭🇺 Must-Try Hungarian Foods

Goulash (Gulyás)
A traditional Hungarian soup made with beef, vegetables and paprika.

Lángos
Deep-fried flatbread usually topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese.

Chicken Paprikash
Creamy paprika chicken traditionally served with nokedli dumplings.

Pörkölt
A rich Hungarian stew that can be made with beef, pork or other meats.

Fisherman’s Soup
A paprika-rich Hungarian fish soup.

🍷 Hungarian Drinks

Tokaji Aszú — famous Hungarian sweet wine.

Hungarian beer — both major local brands and craft options are widely available.

Budapest Restaurant Tips

💰 Service Charge

Many Hungarian restaurants add a service charge to the bill.

Check your receipt before adding an additional tip.

Don’t automatically add another 15–20% without checking what is already included.

💳 Card Payments

Cards are widely accepted in Budapest.

Keep a small amount of HUF cash as backup, particularly for markets and smaller vendors.

🍽️ Tourist Restaurants

Be cautious with restaurants that:

  • Have aggressive street promoters
  • Display confusing prices
  • Hide important charges
  • Pressure you to enter

Váci Street is convenient and central, but don’t assume that the most tourist-visible restaurant is the best one.

Walk a few streets away, compare menus and check recent reviews.

Money, Cards & Currency

💰 Currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF)

Hungary’s official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF / Ft).

💳 Can I Pay by Card?

Yes.

Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted throughout Budapest.

You do not need to carry a large amount of cash.

💶 Should I Pay in Euros?

Hungary uses HUF, not the euro in cash

Some tourist businesses, and big companys may accept euros, but paying in HUF or by card is generally the better choice.

Budapest Safety & Common Tourist Scams

Budapest is generally a safe city for tourists.

Normal big-city precautions are still important.

🚕 Unofficial Taxis

Avoid random drivers approaching you on the street.

Use reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps.

🍸 Nightlife Scams

Be cautious if strangers approach you and aggressively invite you to a particular bar or club.

A common tourist scam involves visitors being encouraged into venues and then receiving extremely inflated bills.

🍽️ Restaurant Bills

Check:

  • Menu prices
  • Service charge
  • Drinks prices
  • Final bill

before paying.

👛 Pickpockets

Be particularly careful in:

  • Crowded public transport
  • Tourist attractions
  • Busy nightlife areas
  • Large events

🏬 Westend & Arena Mall & Smallest: Etele Plaza

Large shopping centers with international brands, restaurants and everyday shopping.

Shopping for souvenirs? Look for Hungarian paprika, wine, sweets, traditional products and local design rather than generic souvenirs.

🍺 Ruin Bars

The Jewish Quarter is famous for its ruin bars and nightlife.

🌃 Rooftop Bars

Great for skyline views, cocktails and sunset.

4-Day - More Things to Do in Budapest

A few extra stops worth knowing about, even if they don’t need a full section:

  • Nyugati Railway Station McDonald’s — yes, a fast food restaurant made this list. It occupies a genuinely ornate 19th-century former restaurant space and is worth a two-minute detour if you’re near the station.
  • Gül Baba’s Tomb — an Ottoman-era pilgrimage site tucked into the Rózsadomb hillside, small and quiet, with a lovely little garden.
  • Liberty Square — grand civic square with a mix of monuments, some genuinely contested politically — worth passing through on the City Walk above.
  • Children’s Railway — a narrow-gauge railway through the Buda Hills, staffed largely by children under adult supervision; pairs naturally with the Libegő chairlift.
  • Normafa — the go-to hillside spot for locals, hiking in summer, sledding in winter.
  • Elizabeth Lookout — Budapest’s highest point, covered above alongside the Libegő chairlift.
  • MOL Campus SkyDeck — a 120-meter observation deck atop Hungary’s tallest building, with an AR app pointing out landmarks; book tickets online in advance, as time slots are limited and it’s closed one Monday a month.
  • Pinball Museum — a hands-on collection of vintage and modern pinball machines you actually get to play, tucked in the Jewish Quarter.
  • Palatinus Beach — an outdoor pool and beach complex on Margaret Island, popular with locals in summer.
  • Kopaszi-gát (Kopaszi Dam) — a modern riverside park on the Buda bank, less touristy, good for a quiet sunset with a drink from one of the waterfront bars.
  • End the trip with a Danube dinner cruise if you want a memorable final evening. 👉 Compare Budapest Dinner Cruises
